Talking Shorts presents “Beyond Festivals”, a new series of panel discussions exploring alternatives in short film exhibition, programming, and distribution, as a proposition to zoom in on underrepresented, local, and intently political models of making and sharing films. The goal is not only to map the current landscape but also to identify emerging opportunities—from hybrid distribution strategies to new approaches to audience development and monetisation in the short-film sector.

For this discussion in collaboration with Kraków Film Festival, we brought together experts and proponents of alternative distribution models to address several core questions. Is the festival circuit still the primary “marketplace” for short films, or has its role shifted toward prestige, curation, and networking? How implicated are they in perpetuating financing models that are becoming more and more challenging? What places do short films occupy alongside other short-form content on social media? Do shorts need a “new life” or a “new home”? Where in art, technology, education, or our own localities do we find or can we create new and more impactful spaces for them and their audiences, both those established and those yet to be reached?

Short films are key to cinematic innovation. Because of their brevity, they allow filmmakers to react to the world around them more instinctively and showcase a stunning range of artistic expressions. As a magazine dedicated to short films, Talking Shorts aims to create a wider discourse about this often-overlooked art form.

We strive to produce universally readable content that can inspire, cultivate, and educate a broad range of audiences, from students and scholars to non-cinephile readers, in an attempt to connect filmmakers, audiences, festival organisers, and a young generation of film lovers who might not yet know what short films are or can do.

Since 2023, Talking Shorts is the official outlet of The European Network for Film Discourse (The END), which consists of 8 unique and diverse European film festivals and is funded by the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme of the European Union. Our work and publications are closely connected to the film festival landscape.
