Once we step outside the festival bubble, where else do we hear or read anything about short films? Forums that address the short format or individual shorts in depth are limited. Short films are not taught much at universities, and without a theatrical release and stars, the press has little interest in them.

How can festival organisers contribute to promoting the discourse on short films outside their own ranks? What conditions are needed, and what measures could be taken to promote thinking and writing, debate, and research about the art form?

To mark the first publication of student essays on Talking Shorts, written during a seminar at the University of Zurich, participants will explore these questions and invite filmmakers and festival representatives to brainstorm.

Moderated by film scholar and curator Laura Walde who is joined by Cynthia Felando (Short Film Studies), Anne Gaschütz (European Network for Film Discourse) and Savina Petkova (Talking Shorts).

Produced by Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, in collaboration with Talking Shorts

The Powerful Queer Space

Paper by Jesper Rusterholz
“Being trans is seen as a stigma — you should be ashamed of being trans, you should be ashamed of being queer […] We’re told constantly to just be quiet, to go live in the dark, to be secretive about who we are. And if we step...

A Short Glimmer of Hope

Paper by Laura Carluccio
While feature films mostly comply with the mainstream and therefore only hesitantly include diverse casts and certain topics, the short film has the option of doing just that. Short films are less expensive and usually take up less time to...

Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur

04.11—09.11.2025
Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur proves that the most exciting festivals often occur in small towns—probably because not much else happens there year-round. But the festival, near Zurich airport, is not just a local celebrity. Year...

Short films are key to cinematic innovation. Because of their brevity, they allow filmmakers to react to the world around them more instinctively and showcase a stunning range of artistic expressions. As a magazine dedicated to short films, Talking Shorts aims to create a wider discourse about this often-overlooked art form.

We strive to produce universally readable content that can inspire, cultivate, and educate a broad range of audiences, from students and scholars to non-cinephile readers, in an attempt to connect filmmakers, audiences, festival organisers, and a young generation of film lovers who might not yet know what short films are or can do.

Since 2023, Talking Shorts is the official outlet of The European Network for Film Discourse (The END), which consists of 8 unique and diverse European film festivals and is funded by the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme of the European Union. Our work and publications are closely connected to the (European) film festival landscape.
